“The Close the Gate Community Group is dedicated to having St Laurence Gate, Drogheda, County Louth, closed to vehicular traffic and opened as a Tourist Amenity. The Gate is under constant threat of damage by vehicular traffic, including collisions, and damage to the fabric of the building from Gypsum caused by traffic fumes.
Our Group was founded in mid-2016 after a number of vehicular damage incidents were witnessed at the Gate, and as a need became apparent for the local community to become involved in protecting and securing the future of our built Heritage, for the sake of the residents and future generations of this unique Town.
In June 2016 the Group were instrumental in an Historic milestone decision being unanimously agreed upon by Drogheda Councillors, this has paved the way for a Consultation process to begin with the inclusion of Residents and stakeholders in the area with a view to achieving the closure of the Gate to vehicular traffic and for it to be developed as the Tourist attraction and local amenity that so many Local residents have wanted for many years.
Our campaign is still in progress and we need the on-going support of the good people of Drogheda and elsewhere to achieve our goal.”
